Project 002 · Mechatronics · Embedded Systems
An Arduino powered smart alert device that pulls live weather data from an external API and actuates a physical flag mechanism when rain is forecast — wrapped in a custom designed, 3D printed enclosure built in Fusion 360.
The Problem
Phone notifications for rain are easy to miss when you are rushing out the door. The goal was an ambient, physical alert — something that exists in your line of sight at the exit and cannot be swiped away.
Beyond the product idea, this was a deliberate exercise in the full mechatronics loop: external software data → microcontroller logic → physical actuation → custom mechanical enclosure.

Engineering Decisions
Physical vs. digital alert: A mechanical flag in your line of sight as you leave is harder to ignore than an LED or app notification.
Custom enclosure: Designed the housing in Fusion 360 specifically for the electronics layout — clean cable routing, correct port placement, and a form factor sized to sit near a door.
Polling interval: Balanced update frequency against power consumption and API rate limits by polling on a fixed timed interval rather than continuously.

Results & Takeaways
Delivered a fully functional, user-ready prototype that closes the loop from live software data to physical world actuation inside a professionally designed enclosure.
This project showcases the mechatronics skill. Wrapping custom-designed mechanical enclosures around functional electronics and external software APIs.
The hardest part was designing the enclosure around the electronics — physical constraints (port locations, wire routing, assembly order) must be accounted for from the start, not solved after.
Iterating in Fusion 360 before printing saved significant time and material — a habit that transfers directly to production manufacturing.
